Lumbar Disc Herniation

Lumbar Disc Herniation

A lumbar hernia, or lumbar disc herniation, occurs when the jelly-like nucleus of an intervertebral disc in the lower back shifts outward through a tear in the disc's outer covering. This can happen anywhere along the spine, but it is most common in the lumbar region. A herniated disc can cause pain, numbness, or weakness in a part of the body, often in the leg or buttock.
